Use utility knife or caulk removal tool to cut away old caulk. Angle blade away from tub to avoid scratches. Remove all residue - caulk won't stick to old caulk. Scrape with plastic scraper if needed.

Clean area with rubbing alcohol or bleach solution to kill mold. Remove all soap scum and residue. Dry thoroughly - moisture prevents adhesion. Wait 24 hours after shower before caulking.

Step 3: Choose Right Caulk
Use 100% silicone for tubs/showers (waterproof, flexible, mold-resistant). White or clear. Acrylic caulk is paintable but not for wet areas. Check curing time before selecting.

Apply painter's tape 1/4" from joint on both surfaces. This creates guide for straight bead and makes cleanup easy. Press tape firmly. Fill tub with water to weigh down before caulking.

Cut tube tip at 45-degree angle (1/4" opening). Hold gun at 45 degrees, push forward (don't pull) with steady pressure. Keep moving - smooth continuous bead. Don't stop mid-way or you'll get lumps.

Within 5-10 minutes (before skin forms): wet finger and run along bead with firm, even pressure. Or use caulk finishing tool. Remove tape immediately while wet. Don't touch for 24 hours. Don't use shower for 48 hours.
