Step 1: Test Battery Health
Signs of weak battery: slow cranking, dimming lights, frequent jump starts needed. Use multimeter: 12.6V or higher = good, 12.4V = 75% charged, 12.2V = 50%, below 12V = needs charge or replacement. Test with engine off.
Digital Multimeter
Essential tool for electrical diagnostics, measures voltage, current, resistance

Step 2: Select Correct Replacement Battery
Check owner's manual or existing battery label for: CCA (cold cranking amps - match or exceed original), group size (physical dimensions), and terminal position. Interstate, DieHard, and Optima are quality brands.
AGM Battery
Absorbed Glass Mat, better for stop-start systems, 4-7 years, maintenance-free
3 Step 3: Remove Old Battery Safely

Step 3: Remove Old Battery Safely
Turn off engine, remove keys. Wear gloves and eye protection. Disconnect NEGATIVE (-) terminal first (usually black), then positive (+) red terminal. Remove hold-down clamp. Lift battery straight up - it's heavy (40+ lbs).
4 Step 4: Clean Battery Tray and Terminals
Step 4: Clean Battery Tray and Terminals
Inspect tray for corrosion. Mix baking soda and water, scrub away any corrosion with wire brush. Rinse with water, dry thoroughly. Clean terminal clamps with wire brush. Check cables for damage.
Battery Terminal Cleaner Brush
Wire brush specifically sized for terminals and clamps
5 Step 5: Install New Battery
Step 5: Install New Battery
Place new battery in tray, ensuring correct orientation (terminals may be on left or right). Install hold-down clamp. Connect POSITIVE (+) red terminal first, then NEGATIVE (-) black terminal. Tighten firmly but don't strip.
6 Step 6: Test and Reset
Step 6: Test and Reset
Start engine - should crank quickly and start easily. Check all electronics work. May need to reset radio presets, clock, power windows (cycle up/down fully). Some cars need battery registration via OBD scanner.
