Step 1: Determine if Problem is Widespread
Test all faucets and showers. If only one fixture affected: localized issue (aerator, valve). If whole house: main line, pressure regulator, or municipal supply issue.
2 Step 2: Clean Faucet Aerators

Step 2: Clean Faucet Aerators
Most common cause. Unscrew aerator from faucet tip (use pliers with tape to protect finish). Remove screen and rubber washer. Soak in vinegar 30 minutes to dissolve mineral deposits. Rinse, reassemble.
3 Step 3: Clean Showerhead

Step 3: Clean Showerhead
Remove showerhead, disassemble, soak parts in white vinegar overnight. For fixed showerheads: fill plastic bag with vinegar, tie around showerhead overnight. Scrub with old toothbrush. Rinse well.
4 Step 4: Check Shut-Off Valves
Step 4: Check Shut-Off Valves
Check valves under sinks and behind toilets are fully open (turn counterclockwise until stop). Check main water valve near meter is fully open. Partially closed valves restrict flow.
5 Step 5: Inspect Pressure Regulator
Step 5: Inspect Pressure Regulator
Located where main line enters house. Normal pressure: 45-60 PSI. Buy pressure gauge ($10) and test at outdoor spigot. If low and regulator is old (10+ years), may need replacement - call plumber.
6 Step 6: Check for Leaks
Step 6: Check for Leaks
Hidden leaks reduce pressure. Check water meter, don't use any water for 2 hours, check again. If meter changed, you have a leak. Inspect visible pipes, look for water stains on ceilings/walls.
7 Step 7: Flush Water Heater
Step 7: Flush Water Heater
If only hot water has low pressure: sediment in water heater. Turn off power/gas, attach hose to drain valve, open valve and drain 3-5 gallons into bucket. Sediment will flush out.
