Step 1: Choose Compatible Dimmer
Match bulb type: LED dimmers for LED bulbs, CFL-compatible for CFL, standard for incandescent. Check wattage rating exceeds your total bulb wattage. Single-pole (one switch) or 3-way (two switches control one light).

Turn off circuit breaker for the switch. Use voltage tester on switch to confirm power is off. Test both terminals. Remove faceplate screws. Remove switch mounting screws.

Note wire connections before disconnecting. Usually: black (hot/line), black or red (load to light), white (neutral - may be capped in box), bare copper (ground). Take photo for reference.

Loosen terminal screws, remove wires. If wires are backstabbed (pushed into holes), insert small screwdriver in release slot while pulling wire. Unbend wires if hooked.

Strip 1/2" insulation if needed. Connect dimmer wires with wire nuts: black dimmer wire to hot (line), red or black dimmer wire to load, green to ground. Tuck wires carefully into box.

Screw dimmer into box (don't force - straighten if crooked). Attach faceplate. Turn power back on. Test switch - light should turn on/off and dim smoothly. Adjust trim if included for minimum brightness level.
