Step 1: Assess Hole Size

Small holes (less than 1"): spackle only. Medium holes (1-6"): mesh patch. Large holes (6"+): drywall patch. Corners: corner bead. For multiple holes, consider replacing entire sheet.

Step 2: Small Holes: Direct Spackle

For nail holes and small dents: clean area, apply spackle with putty knife, slightly overfill. Let dry 1-2 hours. Sand smooth with 120-grit. Second coat if needed. Prime and paint.

Step 3: Medium Holes: Use Mesh Patch

Clean edges of hole, remove loose material. Apply self-adhesive mesh patch over hole. Spread joint compound over patch with 6" knife, feathering edges. Let dry 24 hours. Apply 2nd coat, wider (8-10"). Sand smooth. Prime.

Step 4: Large Holes: Cut and Patch

Cut hole into rectangle/square with utility knife. Cut backing supports (wood strips) longer than hole. Insert and screw to existing drywall behind opening. Cut new drywall to fit, screw to supports. Tape seams.

Step 5: Apply Joint Compound

Apply mesh tape over seams. First coat: fill seams/screw holes, spread thin. Dry 24 hours. Second coat: 6" wider, feather edges. Dry. Third coat: 8-10" wide, ultra-smooth. Let dry, sand with 120-grit.
