1 Step 1: Turn Off Power at Breaker

Step 1: Turn Off Power at Breaker
Turn off circuit breaker controlling the switch. Use voltage tester to confirm power is off - test both switch terminals. If unsure which breaker, turn off main power. Place tape over breaker so others don't turn it back on.

2 Step 2: Remove Old Switch

Step 2: Remove Old Switch
Unscrew faceplate, remove faceplate. Unscrew switch from electrical box. Carefully pull switch out without touching terminals. Take photo of wire connections. Note which wires go to which screws.

Step 3: Identify Switch Type
Single-pole (2 terminals, controls light from one location) or 3-way (3 terminals, controls light from two locations). Match replacement to existing type unless upgrading. Check amp rating - 15A for most homes.
4 Step 4: Disconnect Wires

Loosen terminal screws and remove wires. For backstabbed wires: insert small screwdriver in release slot while pulling wire. Straighten wires if bent. Label wires with tape if you didn't take photo.

Strip 1/2" insulation if needed. Form hooks in wire ends (curve clockwise). Attach wires: hot wires to brass/gold screws, ground to green screw. Tighten screws firmly. Tuck wires into box.

Screw switch to box, keep level. Attach faceplate. Turn breaker back on. Test switch - light should turn on and off smoothly. If backwards (on is down), flip switch in box 180 degrees.
