Step 1: Determine Outlet Type Needed

Standard 15A or 20A outlet (check wire gauge and breaker). GFCI required within 6ft of water sources (kitchen, bathroom, garage, outdoors). USB outlets for convenience. Match color to faceplate.

Step 2: Turn Off Power Safely

Turn off circuit breaker. Test outlet with voltage tester or plug in lamp. Remove faceplate screw. Test again with voltage tester touching each terminal screw. Remove mounting screws, pull outlet from box.

Step 3: Identify Wire Configuration

Take photo before disconnecting. Typically: black (hot), white (neutral), bare copper (ground). May have multiple wires if outlet is in middle of circuit. Note which wires connect to which terminals.

Step 4: Disconnect Old Outlet

Loosen terminal screws on sides and remove wires. Green screw is ground. Brass screws (gold) are hot, silver screws are neutral. For backstabbed wires: insert screwdriver in release slot while pulling.

Step 5: Connect New Outlet

Strip 1/2" insulation if needed. Form hooks in wire ends with needle-nose pliers. Connect: black to brass (hot), white to silver (neutral), bare to green (ground). Hook clockwise around screws, tighten firmly.

Step 6: Install Outlet and Test

Push wires into box carefully (fold accordion-style). Screw outlet to box, keeping outlet level. Install faceplate. Turn power on. Test with voltage tester, then plug in lamp. For GFCI: press TEST button (should trip), then RESET.
