1 Step 1: Get the EXACT correct fluid
Step 1: Get the EXACT correct fluid
Wrong fluid = transmission damage. Type listed on dipstick or in owner's manual. Don't substitute even with 'compatible' fluids.
Warning: Wrong transmission fluid type can damage the transmission within thousands of miles. Verify the EXACT spec before buying.
Owner's manual ATF spec
Mercon LV, Dexron VI, ATF+4, etc. Match exactly.
Valvoline or Mobil 1 OEM-equivalent
Both make fluids matching every spec. ~$8-15 per quart.
2 Step 2: Warm up engine briefly
Step 2: Warm up engine briefly
Run engine 5-10 minutes. Cold fluid drains slowly. Hot fluid drains all the contaminants out.
5-10 min idle to warm fluid
Skip and you leave fluid behind.
3 Step 3: Lift car safely + drain
Step 3: Lift car safely + drain
Jack + stands. Drain pan under transmission pan. Remove drain plug (or pan if no plug).
Jack stands required
Same safety rules as oil change. Never under car on jack alone. ~$45.
4 Step 4: Replace filter (if pan removed)
Step 4: Replace filter (if pan removed)
Some transmissions require dropping the pan to access drain. While pan is off, replace the internal filter and clean the pan magnet.
OEM filter + gasket kit
Brand-specific. ~$30-60.
Clean magnet on pan
Magnet catches metal shavings. Wipe clean before reinstalling.
5 Step 5: Refill with measured amount
Step 5: Refill with measured amount
Refill same volume as drained (mark drain pan level). Most transmissions hold 4-8 quarts. Don't overfill.
Measure drained, refill same
Most accurate. Overfilling causes foaming.
6 Step 6: Check level HOT (engine running)
Step 6: Check level HOT (engine running)
Different from oil. Transmission level checked with engine RUNNING and hot. Shift through gears, return to park, check dipstick.
Engine running + hot + in park
Per manual. Some cars have no dipstick — check at dealer or independent shop.
