1 Step 1: Pick grout: sanded or unsanded
Step 1: Pick grout: sanded or unsanded
Sanded for grout lines wider than 1/8". Unsanded for thin lines. Pre-mixed is easier than powdered for small jobs.
Mapei pre-mixed grout (small jobs)
Ready to use. No mixing dust. Good for one bathroom. ~$30 per gallon.
Custom Building Products Polyblend (powder)
Mix with water. Cheaper for large jobs. ~$15 per bag.
Epoxy grout (premium, stain-proof)
Lifetime durability, harder to apply. ~$60-100 per gallon.
2 Step 2: Apply grout with a rubber float
Step 2: Apply grout with a rubber float
Scoop grout onto tile, push diagonally across joints with float held at 45°. Force grout INTO joints, scrape excess off.
Diagonal across joints (key technique)
Float perpendicular to joint direction. Better fill.
Work in 4×4 ft sections
Grout starts to set in 15-20 min. Don't apply more than you can wipe in that time.
3 Step 3: Wait 15-20 min, then wipe with damp sponge
Step 3: Wait 15-20 min, then wipe with damp sponge
Sponge in circles, light pressure. Removes excess grout from tile surface but leaves grout in joints. Rinse sponge often.
Two buckets: rinse + clean water
Same idea as washing dishes. Don't put dirty sponge back in clean water.
Circular wiping motion
Straight wiping pulls grout out of joints. Circles polish without removing.
4 Step 4: Polish off the haze
Step 4: Polish off the haze
An hour after wiping, a haze appears on tiles. Polish with dry microfiber. Looks dirty until polished.
Polish with dry microfiber after 1 hr
Reveals the actual finish.
5 Step 5: Seal grout after 72 hours
Step 5: Seal grout after 72 hours
Grout cures in 72 hours. Then apply penetrating sealer to prevent stains and water absorption.
Apply with small brush along joints
Slow but precise. Doesn't soak tile.
