1 Step 1: Confirm electrical box is fan-rated
Step 1: Confirm electrical box is fan-rated
Standard light boxes can't support fan weight + vibration. Fan-rated boxes are marked 'For Use With Ceiling Fans.' If yours isn't, replace before installing.
Warning: Standard light boxes can fail under fan weight + vibration. Fan FALLING from ceiling = ruined room + injury. Always verify fan-rated box.
Saf-T-Brace fan-rated electrical box
Goes in if you don't have one. Adjusts to fit joist spacing. ~$30.
Check existing box for 'fan-rated' label
Stamped on bracket. If labeled, you're good.
2 Step 2: Pick a fan
Step 2: Pick a fan
Match fan size to room. 36-44" for small rooms. 52-56" for medium. 60"+ for large rooms. CFM rating matters more than blade size.
Hampton Bay (Home Depot mid-tier)
Wide selection, decent quality. ~$100-200.
3 Step 3: Turn off breaker, remove old fixture
Step 3: Turn off breaker, remove old fixture
Verify power off with voltage tester. Unscrew old fixture from mounting plate. Disconnect wires.
4 Step 4: Mount fan bracket + assemble fan
Step 4: Mount fan bracket + assemble fan
Mounting bracket screws to electrical box. Assemble fan body, then hang from bracket hook to free both hands for wiring.
Assemble blades AFTER mounting (less weight)
Heavy with blades. Attach those last.
Hang fan body on bracket hook (key step)
Lets you wire with both hands. Skip and you're balancing fan + wiring with one hand.
5 Step 5: Wire it: black-black, white-white, ground
Step 5: Wire it: black-black, white-white, ground
Black hot to black. White neutral to white. Green/copper ground. Some fans have separate light kit wire (blue).
Wire nuts on each connection
Wrap with electrical tape after for security. ~$5.
Blue wire = light kit (separate switch)
If you have a separate light switch, connect to that line. Otherwise cap.
6 Step 6: Test + balance
Step 6: Test + balance
Restore power. Test all speeds + light. Wobble = balance issue. Use included balance weights on blade that's furthest off.
Balance kit (included with fan)
Adhesive weights stick to blade tops. Move until wobble stops.
Cardboard test for blade level
Hold cardboard at edge of each blade as fan rotates by hand. All blades same distance = balanced.
