How to Jump Start a Car

6 steps 15 min Beginner

Jump-starting a car is a 10-minute fix if you have the right cables (or better, a portable jump starter) — and a $100 tow fee if you don't. The procedure is simple but the connection ORDER matters: get it wrong and you can damage electronics or spark in front of the battery.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Get jumper cables OR a portable jump starter

Two options: traditional cables (need a working car) or a lithium jump pack (no second car needed). Jump packs are the modern winner — $80 buys 5+ years of independence.

NOCO Boost Plus GB40 jump starter

Lithium pack, 1000 amps, no second car needed. Charges via USB-C from any phone charger. ~$110-135.

NOCO Boost HD GB70 (bigger truck/diesel)

Heavy-duty version. Handles V8s, diesel pickups, trucks. ~$160-200.

$180 one-time View Details

Cartman 4-gauge 20-foot jumper cables

Traditional cables. Need a second working car. 4-gauge is thick enough for most engines. ~$22-30.

$25 one-time View Details

Energizer 8-gauge 16-foot cables (budget)

Acceptable budget cables. Thinner gauge = slower transfer. ~$18-22.

Step 2: Park the cars close (cables only)

Nose-to-nose or side-by-side, close enough that the cables reach both batteries. Both cars OFF. Engines NOT running.

Parked nose-to-nose, both engines off

Cars should NOT touch. Both in park (or 1st gear if manual), parking brakes on, engines OFF.

Skip parking step (jump pack)

Jump pack works without a second car. Open the hood of the dead car, connect, done.

Step 3: Connect the cables in the CORRECT order

ORDER MATTERS. Red to dead positive (+), red to good positive, black to good negative (-), black to UNPAINTED METAL on dead car (not the battery). This last step is critical — sparks near the dead battery can ignite hydrogen gas.

Warning: Connect to UNPAINTED METAL on the dead car, NOT directly to the negative terminal. Battery vents hydrogen — a spark there can cause a real explosion. Always connect last cable to a chassis bolt or engine bracket.

Step 1: Red clamp to DEAD car positive (+)

Positive is marked with + or red. Clamp securely.

0
Step 2: Red clamp to GOOD car positive (+)

Same — mark or color. Other end of the red cable.

0
Step 3: Black clamp to GOOD car negative (-)

Marked - or black. Direct to the battery terminal on the good car.

0
Step 4: Black clamp to UNPAINTED metal on DEAD car (NOT battery)

Engine block bolt, chassis ground. Anywhere shiny metal that's far from the battery. This is where sparks WILL happen — keep them away from battery vents.

Step 4: Start the good car, let it run 2-3 minutes

Start the working car, let it idle for 2-3 minutes. Power flows through the cables into the dead battery — gives it enough charge to crank.

Idle good car 2-3 minutes before trying dead car

Patience here pays off. A quick attempt right after connection often fails — give the dead battery time to absorb charge.

Jump pack: skip this step — already charged

Lithium jump packs deliver full power immediately. No waiting.

Step 5: Start the dead car

Crank the dead car. If it doesn't start within 10 seconds, stop, wait 2-3 more minutes, try again. If it doesn't start after 3 attempts, the problem is bigger than a dead battery.

Crank up to 10 seconds, then wait

Long cranks drain the partially-charged battery AND overheat the starter motor.

0
3 failed attempts = battery is dead or alternator broken

Battery may need replacement (cycled too many times). If it starts but dies in 5 minutes, the alternator isn't charging.

Step 6: Disconnect cables in REVERSE order

Reverse of connection: black off dead car's chassis, black off good car's negative, red off good car's positive, red off dead car's positive. The same 'last connected, first disconnected' rule.

Disconnect in exact reverse order

Same logic as connecting — last spark stays away from the dead battery's vents.

0
Drive the dead car for 30+ minutes after

Alternator needs time to fully recharge the battery. Don't immediately turn it off after starting.

0
Replace battery if it dies again within a week

Modern car batteries last 4-7 years. If yours dies after one jump-start, it's at end of life. Costco, Walmart, AutoZone all install batteries free with purchase.
