How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes on Your Property
Mosquitoes breed in any standing water — a bottle cap is enough. Eliminating breeding sites cuts populations by 80%+ without chemicals. Larvicide tabs handle water you can't drain. Sprays and traps work for ambushed yards.
Your Progress

1 Step 1: Eliminate ALL standing water (#1 fix)
Step 1: Eliminate ALL standing water (#1 fix)
Anywhere that holds water for 4+ days breeds mosquitoes. Buckets, gutters, kiddie pools, plant saucers, tire ruts, old toys, birdbaths. Walking your yard with a notepad finds 10-20 sources at any house.
Walk yard, identify every container that holds water
Toys, gutters, plant saucers, downspout splash blocks, bird baths. Anything that catches rain.
Clean gutters (#1 hidden breeding spot)
Clogged gutters hold 1+ inch of stagnant water. Clean twice a year minimum.
Empty plant saucers and bird baths weekly
Refill bird baths with fresh water weekly — mosquitoes need 4+ days to develop.
Cover or invert anything you can't drain
Buckets upside-down. Kiddie pools covered. Cover before storage.
2 Step 2: Drop larvicide tabs in standing water you can't drain
Step 2: Drop larvicide tabs in standing water you can't drain
Mosquito Dunks (BTI) kill larvae in water but are harmless to fish, birds, pets, humans. Drop in rain barrels, decorative ponds, sump pumps, and any other water that can't be emptied.
Summit Mosquito Dunks (BTI)
Lasts 30 days per dunk. Treats 100 sq ft of standing water. ~$15 for 6.
Mosquito Bits (granules)
Same BTI in granular form. Sprinkle on standing water for fast kill. ~$15.
3 Step 3: Add traps for adult mosquitoes
Step 3: Add traps for adult mosquitoes
Traps lure adults with CO2, light, or pheromones. Best in spring/early summer to catch breeding females before they lay eggs.
DynaTrap DT1100 (1/2-acre coverage)
UV + heat + CO2 trap. Quiet, no chemicals. ~$80-100.
Mosquito Magnet Patriot Plus (larger yards)
Propane-powered CO2 lure. Up to 1 acre. ~$300-400.
Thermacell Patio Shield (zone protection)
Pyrethrin-puffer, creates a 15-ft no-fly zone for outdoor sitting. ~$25.
4 Step 4: Apply yard spray treatment (seasonal)
Step 4: Apply yard spray treatment (seasonal)
Permethrin-based yard spray covers shrubs and turf where adult mosquitoes rest. Treat in early evening when mosquitoes are most active. Re-apply every 3-4 weeks during peak season.
Spectracide Bug Stop yard spray
Permethrin-based. Hose-end sprayer. Treats 5000 sq ft per bottle. ~$15-20.
Bifen IT (commercial concentrate)
Pro-grade bifenthrin. Mix with water in tank sprayer. Lasts 3+ months. ~$30.
Tank sprayer for application
1 or 2-gal pump sprayer for liquid concentrates. ~$25.
5 Step 5: Personal repellent for outdoor time
Step 5: Personal repellent for outdoor time
Even with yard treatment, mosquitoes still bite. DEET-based or picaridin sprays are the gold standard. Citronella candles are mostly placebo.
Sawyer Picaridin (less greasy than DEET)
Same effectiveness, no DEET smell, doesn't damage clothing. ~$10.
Permethrin-treated clothing
Spray permethrin on clothes — kills mosquitoes that land on you. Lasts through 6 washes. Best for camping/hiking. ~$15.
